“Childhood Is a Journey. . . . .Not a Race. . .”

Jim Grant, Founder SDE

Welcome to the Early Childhood Center at Bayside Academy where our Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students begin their exciting educational journey. We are delighted that you have chosen Bayside to launch your child’s educational experience.

Through exploration and hands-on experiences, our ECC students develop a natural curiosity and understanding of their world. By providing a nurturing and caring environment in the Early Childhood Center, the children are encouraged to make a smooth transition from their home environment to a school setting. We are aware that attitudes are developed and habits are formed during the early childhood years. In the Early Childhood Division of Bayside Academy, emphasis is placed on helping the students develop an understanding of themselves while becoming aware of the feelings of others. By building self-confidence and developing self-discipline, our Early Childhood programs lay the foundation for our students to develop strong character and good citizenship.

During my 37 years as a faculty member at Bayside Academy, I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to observe many children navigate through their entire Bayside experience. One of the highlights of my career has been the privilege to teach the children of so many of my former students. This is just one of the many elements which make Bayside Academy so unique to our community.

Every day is an adventure in our ECC classrooms! In addition to special events such as Back to School Night, Grandparents’ Day, Day 100, our Mother’s Day Spa and the End of the Year Party, the students will also experience field trips and many holiday celebrations. Highlights in Kindergarten include: Western Week, The Polar Express Breakfast, Donuts with Dad, Dr. Seuss Week, and Kindergarten Fun Week in May. Pre-Kindergarten children look forward to Pajama Day and trips to the farm and zoo. Your classroom teachers and I will keep you posted of the details for each event. The ECC faculty and staff welcome your participation in activities and celebrations during the course of the school year.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with your questions, comments or concerns.

Sincerely,
Marilee Propst
ECC Division Director

ATTENTION PARENTS:

As an increasing number of our students have become owners of personal electronic devices, the administrative staff of Bayside Academy felt the need to issue a policy regarding the proper use of personal electronic devices on our campus. As educators we recognize the benefit to be gained from allowing our students to have access to certain types of electronic devices. However, we are also aware of the potential dangers that exist through unlimited and unmonitored access to the internet. Our goal is to implement the use of technology without sacrificing the safety and well-being of our students.

Bayside is a Pre-Kindergarten through Twelfth grade school and we recognize that an across the board policy will not serve the best interest of our students. Therefore, we ask that you familiarize yourself with the policy relating to the grade level(s) in your home.

Parents must understand that non-compliance with our established policy will result in the confiscation of the electronic devise being used and a loss of electronic device privileges for the student involved. In addition, future access to the use of such devices may be denied. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s Division Director if you have any questions.

PRE-KINDERGARTEN THROUGH GRADE ONE

The classrooms of the students in these grade levels are equipped with the technology deemed appropriate for the students to use within the school day. Also, due to the nature and maturity level of the children in this age group, we have determined there is no need for them to bring personal devices to school. All such devices should remain at home. Bayside Academy Welcomes Legacy Families

For 32 Eastern Shore families, the words Back to School have a very special meaning. Fifty-five of the more than 700 children enrolled at Bayside Academy for this school year are Legacies, children of Bayside graduates. Leading the pack are seniors Courtney Harrell, daughter of Jo and Dr. Doug Harrell ’81, and Virginia Pittman, daughter of Lynn and Sen. Trip Pittman ’78. The eighth grade has the most with a total of seven legacy students, while every other grade from PK through 12 has at least two legacies in the class. Posted 8/21/12

Sophie Weller and LeeAnn Bonner are students in Mrs. Priscilla Comer’s Pre-kindergarten class. Both the girls and their mothers enjoyed the opportunity to “Meet the Teacher” and visit the classroom before the start of school.
