Seven Bayside seniors have been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program. Sarah Katherine Street and Audrey Wilson have been named National Merit Finalists; Chris Ives, Hannah Lyle, Kevin Nelson and Stew Shoemaker are National Merit Commended Scholars; and Lauren White is a National Merit Hispanic Scholar. To celebrate the students’ achievements, congratulate them in a special way and encourage them to stretch themselves and maximize their talents, Bayside recently hosted a pen ceremony for the students, their families, faculty and friends.
Bayside Headmaster Tom Johnson got the idea for a pen ceremony from the movie “A Beautiful Mind.” Mirroring the scene in the movie in which the professors, as a sign of respect and acknowledgement of his intellectual achievements, present pens to Professor John Nash, the movie’s protagonist, “I thought it would be fitting to establish a tradition to do the same for our students who accomplish such an honorable achievement as being recognized by the National Merit scholarship Program,” Johnson said.
Following a luncheon reception, each student was introduced by a former teacher who then presented him or her with a pen.
The National Merit Scholarship Program will announce its college-sponsored scholarship recipients in May.
