Bayside Academy Honors the 2013 Inductees of the Academic & Professional Society
Bayside Academy inducted four alumni and three honorary members into its Academic and Professional Society at a special ceremony on campus, held February 1, 2013. The inductees included Sen. Trip Pittman (’78), Mr. Michael Niemeyer (’82), Mr. Adam Berns (’83), and Dr. Scott Ennis (’88). The honorary inductees included the late Mr. John A. Robertson, the late Mrs. Beverly Warley, and Mrs. Jeanne Yancey.
State Senator Trip Pittman (’78) is a graduate of the University of Alabama. He is the founder of Pittman Tractor Company, a dealer in heavy equipment and repairs. Pittman was elected to the state senate in 2007 and re-elected in 2010. He serves on the Constitution, Campaign Finance, Ethics and Election, Education Committee, Finance and Taxation General Fund, Government Affairs, Rules, and Tourism and Marketing Committees. He is the chairperson of the Finance and Taxation Education Committee. Sen. Pittman has served as a director on the boards of Compass Bank, The Coastal Conservation Association, Baldwin County United, and Bayside Academy.
Mr. Michael Niemeyer (’82) attended Louisiana State University. He graduated from LSU in 1986 and obtained his J.D. from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1990. Mr. Niemeyer is a member of the Baldwin County, Mobile County, Alabama State, and American Bar Associations. He is also involved with the Alabama Defense Lawyers Association, the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel, and the Defense Research Institute. He currently serves as the Vice President of the Baldwin County Bar Association and will serve as that organization’s president next year.
Mr. Adam Berns (’83) studied International Business in Munich, Salzburg, and Vienna before receiving his degree from the American University of Paris. While at university he co-founded a software localization company and successfully sold it to International Communications in 1992 and became their General Manager. In 1994, Mr. Berns joined Ziff-Davis. He joined Microsoft Corporation in 1999 as a Group Unit Manager and was later promoted to Product Unit Manager for Encarta before moving out of the engineering and product teams into business development. In his more than 13 years at Microsoft, Mr. Berns has helped ship 11 products and worked in Windows, Office, and Xbox before being promoted to General Manager of Microsoft’s Office division. He specializes in intellectual property deals, merger and acquisitions, and strategy.
Dr. Scott Ennis (’88) graduated from medical school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1996. He was named both “Best Intern” and “Outstanding Chief Resident.” Following UAB, he was recruited for a Plastic Surgery Fellowship at The University of Virginia, considered one of the best university hospitals in the country. During his tenure, Dr. Ennis published a paper in “The American Surgeon” on a new procedure to repair injuries suffered by victims of major trauma. Surgeons around the world now use this procedure. Additionally, he was honored with the “Raymond F. Morgan Award” for original research in Plastic Surgery. He completed his residency in 2003 and joined Destin Plastic Surgery. Dr. Ennis specializes in endoscopic minimal incision facial surgery, which allows dramatic results while minimizing visible scars. He is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the American College of Surgeons, the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the Southeastern Congress of Surgeons, and the Bio-Identical Hormone Society. Dr. Ennis is certified by both the American Board of Surgery and The American Board of Plastic Surgery.
Mrs. Jeanne Yancey, honorary, a graduate of Auburn University, was the single most influential force in founding St. James School in Fairhope. Mrs. Yancey undertook the task in 1966 and by the fall of 1967, St. James Episcopal School opened with students in pre-school through third grade. The school’s Board of Directors then made the decision to transform it into an Independent School. In the fall of 1970, they opened Bayside Academy. Many of the members of the St. James Board of Directors continued on as members of the initial Bayside Board. The smoothness of the transition from St. James to Bayside is best represented by this fact: every single student who ended the year at St. James that last spring began the next school year at Bayside. Mrs. Yancey was honored for her contribution to the school at Bayside’s Ten Year Anniversary celebration. At that time, the Jeanne Yancey Service Award was created in her honor.
Mrs. Beverly Warley, honorary, partnered with Mrs. Jeanne Yancey to smooth the way for the opening of St. James Episcopal School. When the school opened its doors in 1967, Mrs. Warley realized her dream of teaching and was its first kindergarten teacher. Sadly, she did not teach long. In October of that same year Mrs. Warley became ill and was diagnosed with cancer. She died shortly after Christmas. The school community banded together to form a memorial fund in her honor. At Awards Day, a Bayside junior is named the Beverly Warley Award winner and is presented a check from that fund to help defray college expenses.
Mr. John A. Robertson, honorary, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, graduated from Auburn University and later moved to Fairhope in 1961 when he purchased an insurance company. As was his nature, he quickly became involved in the community and served on the Fairhope City Council. He served on the Board of Directors for St. James Episcopal Day School, and when the decision was made to transition to an Independent School, Mr. Robertson agreed to serve as its first Chairman of the Board of Directors. Bayside’s annual golf tournament is named after Mr. Robertson. In addition, The John A. Robertson Citizenship Award is presented yearly to an eighth grade recipient. Mr. Robertson passed away in 1992. Posted 2/6/13

Bayside Academy Celebrates the 100th Day of School
The kindergarten classes at Bayside Academy recently participated in a few fun projects to celebrate the 100th Day of School! Each student was asked to create a hat with 100 items on it. The students utilized everything from feathers to pennies, from lollipops to popcorn, on their chapeaus and then conducted a parade to show them off!
As a family project, each student collected 100 like items from home in a plastic bottle. The students then brought their bottles to school, along with a list of three clues about what was contained inside. With the bottles hidden in paper bags, the rest of the class used the clues to guess what each bottle held. What a fun way to celebrate 100 great days at Bayside! Posted 2/5/13

Bayside Hosts Screening as Part of Jewish Film Festival
Bayside Academy recently hosted a screening of “As Seen Through These Eyes,” as part of the 12th Annual Mobile Jewish Film Festival. “As Seen Through These Eyes,” written and directed by Hilary Helstein and narrated by Maya Angelou, documents the stories of Holocaust survivors and the art they created during a time they were faced with unimaginable odds.
Dr. Fran Sterling, Senior Associate for Research and Development of Facing History and Ourselves in Denver, introduced the film, which was held in The Pilot Center. The screening was open to Bayside students as well as students from Fairhope Middle School and Robertsdale. See Full Story Posted 1/14/13

Bayside Academy’s Christmas Together
Bayside Academy welcomed over 1,000 parents, alumni, and friends for the two-part Christmas Together program on December 14 in the Pilot Center Theatre.
Christmas Together is a wonderful, age-old tradition at Bayside that was started by our very first Headmaster, David Smith. When Bayside initially opened, it was first through eighth grades. As the year progressed, the teachers made sure that the oldest and youngest students interacted, and at Christmas, each eighth grader was given the name of one first grader for whom he specifically decorated a small tree (about 20” tall) and presented it to the first grader at Christmas Together. This tradition continues today, and the first graders received their trees at this year’s Christmas Together program. See Full Story Posted 12/19/12

Bayside Academy Rocket Launch
On Thursday, November 29, 8th grade physical science students at Bayside Academy launched rockets at Freedom Track and Field with the help of mechanical engineering students from the University of South Alabama. The winning rocket, “The Banana,” launched 310 feet.
After showing the Bayside students a slide show with information on rockets (including the math and science involved), the USA students worked with the 8th graders in teams to build paper rockets out of paper, washers, straws, glue, and tape. Motors were then attached to launch the rockets. See Full Story Posted 12/12/12
Bayside Academy’s second grade Pirate Day
In social studies, Bayside Academy’s second graders learn many map skills. To celebrate our new knowledge, we have Pirate Day because everyone knows that pirates must be able to read maps! On that special day, we dress as pirates and read about real pirates like Blackbeard, Black Bellamy, William Kidd, and even real women pirates like Anne Bonny. We make our own pirate maps and learn to make a compass rose. See Full Story Posted 12/10/12

Kim Campbell Photography Exhibit at Bayside Academy
Bayside Academy is pleased to announce that Kim Howard Campbell’s polo photography will be exhibited in the Lorna Huey Gallery in the Pilot Center through the end of the month.

Students created miniature Alabama Indian villages
Bayside Academy fourth grade students recently created miniature Alabama Indian villages in a project done completely in class. The children used everything from nature and some molding clay, toothpicks, craft sticks and fabric to create the villages. Each class was divided into four groups, and each group represented an Indian tribe from Alabama: Creek, Choctaw, Cherokee, and Chickasaw. The children had fun making sure that their villages had a water source, a council house, a fire, a garden, a palisade (fence), two Indians, two animals, and two huts. The children really used their imagination and came up with amazing villages.
The children also research each tribe. They used the many books that the Bayside Library has gotten throughout the years for this project. The children then practiced an oral report in class. The kindergarten through 3rd graders came to our rooms in the Learning Center and listened to our reports and saw the villages. Mrs. Kalaris is very proud of this year's fourth graders – they did a great job! Posted 12/4/12
Bayside Academy 8th Graders Design Book Jackets
Bayside Academy students created new book jackets for some well-known books. Students were allowed to select a book from an approved list and had different activities as they progressed through the novel. The final project was that each student had to create a new book jacket incorporating the same items that are traditionally on a book jacket (brief description of the main characters and plot; quotes from the novel that reveal plot, theme, or characterization; kudos and facts about the author; quotes from other sources with praise; and comparisons to other books in the same genre). Students could not copy any images that are on the actual jacket and had to put the author information in their own words. They created the jackets in the computer lab using a pamphlet template and were instructed by Emily Hankins on text box set-up, color coordination, and image input.
