Bayside earns FOUR State Championships!
2012-2013 Accolades
Signings
- Gaines Minton signed a scholarship to play soccer at Gordon College near Boston, Mass.
- Johnathon Walton signed a scholarship to play football at the University of South Carolina.
- Gabby Deshotel signed a scholarship to play volleyball at the University of Alabama, Birmingham.
Volleyball
History Made – Again! The Lady Admirals secured their 11th Consecutive State Title at the volleyball championship in 2012, which was also Bayside’s 21st state volleyball crown overall. The girls made history as both achievements are state records! The team was led by Coaches Ann Schilling, Brenda Allen and Monique Adams. Additionally, seniors Gabby Deshotel and Virginia Pittman were named Press-Register co-players of the year, Gabby was named to the MaxPreps All-American team, and Virginia was named Gatorade’s Volleyball Player of the Year. Also, juniors Sydney Chandler and Morgan Dulaney were named to the South All-Star team for the 17th annual Alabama All-Star Sports Week competition
Football
It was the fifth straight year to make the AHSAA football playoffs! Led by Coach Phil Lazenby, the team had a 7-5 record and a 5-2 region record. The Admirals won the first playoff game against Dale County on the road, but the season ended with a 22-21 loss to # 2 ranked Leeds High School. Seniors Johnathan Walton, Trey Smith and Michael Daves all made honorable mention All-State. Additionally, Joe Stassen was one of five candidates nominated for “top high school performance” by the Press Register fan poll; and senior Johnathan Walton and Coach Lazenby were honored at the 1st and 10 Club, where Johnathan was named Defensive Player of the Week.

Cross Country
The girls’ team took the 3A championship title last fall, where Mary Catherine Branyon, Molly Pinnix and Abby Warner earned All-State Honors. On the boys’ team, Ryan Shankle and Ash Midyett earned All-State Honors. Additionally, Alona Melendez was chosen as the Student of the Week for the goDaddy.com Boal – 1st and 10 Club; and Junior Ryan Shankle, and 7th graders Mary Catherine Branyon and Abby Warner were each named Mobile Optimist Club Runner of the Week during the season.
SWIM
Basketball
Under the leadership of Coach Ralph Watson, the team won 23 games against 9 losses this season, ranked in the top 10 for most of the year, and went undefeated in 3A Area 1! Bayside hosted the Area tournament this year as the top seed, with Dakota Brodie and Spencer Newman carrying the team offensively and David Deneefe and Nelson Newman faring very well on the defensive end of the court. Additionally, Spencer won honorable mention standing as a Press-Register Sports Writers nominee!
Led by Coach Brittany Davidson, the girls’ team was the runner-up in the Area Tournament. Additionally, senior Virginia Pittman scored her 1,000th point in the January 31, 2013, game against Spanish Fort, joining an exclusive group of Lady Admirals to do so!
Soccer
Under the leadership of Coach Jamie Ferguson, the boy’s program ranked #2 in the state for most the season. The team was the runner-up in the Southern Shootout Tournament and placed 3rd in the All Metro League. They scored 74 goals with a pass completion rate of over 80 percent, completing over 7000 passes. Nick James and Trey Smith made the All Metro Team, and Colin Douglas, Thomas McLendon, Gaines Minton, Alexander Stevens and Harrison York were selected for Battle of the Bay.
Led by Coach Josh Montgomery, it was a big season for girls’ soccer! The team returned to the playoffs for the first time in six years and also attained its highest in-season ranking since 2007 at #6 in the state in class 1A-4A! Additionally, Dorothy Walton and Emily Wright were selected to represent Baldwin County in the Battle of the Bay game. Taking a break from the field, the girls had the opportunity to visit the University of Alabama Women’s Soccer Team Facility where they were toured by three Alabama players as well as Alabama Assistant Coach Tatum Clowney.
Track
The girls’ team once again took the title as 3A State Track and Field Champions! Senior Emory Builta won the Discus and earned the silver medal in the Javelin and the bronze in the Shot Put. Senior Alona Melendez earned gold medals in the 100m and 300m hurdle events and a silver in the triple jump. Senior Molly Pinnix earned a bronze medal in the 4x800 relay and a gold in the 4x400 relay. Carlisle Calametti and Bowen Spotswood earned a gold medal in the 4x400 relay. Trista Barry won an individual gold medal in the High Jump and a bronze medal in the Long Jump. Sydney Chandler scored in the Javelin and Discus, Jane Ann Cicco scored in the 100, 200 and 4x100 Relay, Catie Caldwell earned a gold medal in the 4x800 relay, Sydnie Goe scored in the 4x100 Relay, Isabel Leatherbury scored in the High Jump and Mary Catherine Branyon took the bronze medal in the 4x800 relay and scored in the 800, 1600 and 3200 runs while setting a new school record of 2:25.89 as a 7th grader.
The boys finished 11th at State, where Nelson Newman, Joe Stassen, Garris Goe and Cody Dobbins set a new school record in the Boys 4x100 Relay. Joe, Ryan Phipps, Ryan Shankle and Weston Robles finished 4th in the 4x400 Relay - nearly winning the bronze medal.
Baseball
Under the leadership of Athletic Director and Coach Doug Leffard, the baseball team ended its season with a 25-10 overall record, and was runner-up in the 3A Area 1 Championship. The team also made its 10th consecutive playoff appearance and had four members: Mason Downey, Jacob Graddick, Kevin Masterson and Joe Stassen, selected to the East-West All Star team!
Softball
Coached by Brittany Davidson, the softball team finished the year with a 9-10 record. The team competed in all 19 games this season with only one senior, Mary Claire Moorhead. Additionally, the team celebrated its first “out-of-the-park” home run by Sydney Chandler in its April 22, 2013, game against McGill-Toolen!
Golf
The boys’ golf team won its first State Championship in Bayside history! The team’s combined score was 34 shots better than the second place team. The team included: William Buhl, Jacob Dyas, Tristan Ellis, Trey Smith and John Solberg.
Tennis
The boys finished third at the 1A-3A State championship in Mobile this season! Eighth grader Trent Kanneigeter won the individual State championship title, singles…and doubles, with senior Collin Wilkins! Additionally, Martin Cunningham and Jay Caldwell made it to the finals at number 2, doubles, and Mac Knight and Mark McCall made it to the finals at number 3, doubles. Caldwell also made it to the finals at number 2, singles.
The girls’ team also competed and Philipe Herndon made it to the semi-finals at number 3, singles, and Elizabeth Weller made it to the semi-finals at number 6, singles.
Young Athletes
- The Middle School girls’ soccer program finished the season tied with UMS-Wright for #1 in the Mobile County Soccer league!
- The 8th grade Lady Admirals volleyball team captured the Mobile Middle School League championship for the second year in a row. This was the sixth Middle School victory for Coach Chrissy Thompson!
- The Middle School football team won its championship after beating Mobile Christian 20-18 in the final game!
