THE CAPTAIN'S LOG
From Head of School Peter B. Huestis

TEAM BAYSIDE!
As I reflect on my first year as Head of School at Bayside, I am reminded of how fortunate my family and I are to have become a part of such a wonderful community. We have been welcomed with open arms and we look forward to raising our boys in a community that will help support their development into fine young men....fine young Admirals.
While it is typical to look at strong numbers in admissions (waiting pools and record re-enrollments) and development (record Annual Giving Campaign totals & surpassing our Bay Affair goal) in declaring this year a success - as an educator I am more focused on what was learned to define our achievements.
During the course of the year I have learned that our school benefits from a strong contingent of faculty and coaches dedicated to the task of reaching and teaching our students. I have learned that the support staff helping make the magic happen always bands together and works tirelessly in support of each child and teacher on our campus. I have learned that our parents and alumni are keenly interested in helping us discover the balance between innovation and tradition that best serves our students in the 21st Century. I have learned that the Board of Trustees is leading and supporting the work done on our campus each day.
With a strong mix of veterans and a few new faces joining Team Bayside for the 2013-2014 school year, the future could not look brighter. We began important work this year by discussing ways that we can move beyond Good and become Great. We established a divisional structure that will best support our teachers and students. Faculty committees worked collaboratively toward future enhancements to our schedule, evaluation and professional development programs, technology integration, and 21st Century education pedagogy.
I have learned, above all else, that Bayside Academy is a school with which I am proud to be associated both as a parent and as an educator. I look forward to learning more about our school and the culture of the Eastern Shore community as we continue to ask questions in search of excellence in all that we do each day.
