Our History

Situated on an oak-shaded bluff overlooking Mobile Bay, the campus of Bayside Academy is steeped in history. During the Civil War, the property was shelled during the Battle of Mobile Bay. The property was originally settled in 1837 by a retired sea captain, William Howard, and his wife. The Greek revival mansion that they built is our landmark building, which houses our administration offices.

Bayside Academy was founded in 1970 by Baldwin County families seeking a challenging college preparatory environment for their children. Since its inception, Bayside has continuously raised the bar through program and facility improvements. Over the years, Bayside has added the McLean Building, which houses numerous classrooms, a science complex and computer facility, The Hodgson Early Childhood Center, a Student Activities Center, a Media Center that includes a state-of-the-art library, a new Middle School addition, an off-site Athletic Complex, a Field House, and a renovated gym. Additionally, the Fine Arts curriculum has been further developed in recent years with the addition of several courses in drama and ballet.

With a rising reputation for comprehensive excellence, Bayside ranks as one of the state's premier independent schools.
