March 9: 6 p.m. Dick Cooper Photography Exhibit, 7 p.m. "Muscle Shoals" Documentary
March 10: Concert begins at 7 p.m. in The Pilot Center
This school year a new interdisciplinary course entitled Understanding the Southern Mystique was introduced to our Upper School student body by a team of teachers from the Social Studies and Fine Art departments. In Understanding the Southern Mystique, students investigate the concept of Southern identity through six lenses: fine art, economics, film, music, race relations and psychology.
The student-driven, capstone event that Southern Mystique students are helping to organize is called High Tide Southern Music Showcase. On March 9-10, Southern Mystique students and students from the Bayside music community will experience first hand the legendary insight and experiences of Muscle Shoals Swampers. The music-focused events will include question and answer panels for all Bayside students grades 9-12, a free Muscle Shoals photography reception and Southern Mystique student art show, and a screening of the film “Muscle Shoals.”
The culminating event on Friday evening will be a live concert featuring the Swampers with Jimmy Hall (Wet Willie) and other legendary musicians from Muscle Shoals on the Bayside Academy Bluff. Concert tickets will be on sale beginning Thursday, February 2. The link to event information can be found on the school home page at www.baysideacademy.org. Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $10 for students and senior citizens.
Southern Mystique students and faculty are thrilled to present this unique opportunity to our school and community. Please contact Jenni Startling at (251) 338-6438 for sponsorship opportunities or with event questions.
