Last season (indoor)

 Winter 2018

For the second time in three years, our young women’s team finished State Runner-Up for the 1A-3A AHSAA classification.  Senior Amber Mason led the way with two individual State Champion performances, 16’ 5.5” long jump and 30’ 6.5” shot put.  Our women’s 4x200m relay finished 2nd.  Relay members include seniors Caroline Young, Mary Catherine Branyon, Emily Miller, and sophomore Lauren West. 
Our young men’s team finished with our best finish ever, 4th.  Our men’s 4x800m relay captured the State title with a 8:35.23.  Relay members include seniors Luke Dobbins, Robert Sullivan, junior Bradley Schmidt, and sophomore Myles Cook.  We had three individual medalist: Luke Dobbins 2nd in the 800m run, Robert Sullivan 3rd in the 400m dash, and senior Ahmad Al-Salem in pole vault.

With the return of Indoor track and field in the winter of 2012, our program has competed in each of the seven seasons at the Birmingham CrossPlex.  Our young women have finished State Runner-Up three times: 2013, 2016, and 2018.  Our young men’s teams’ best finish was this past season, 4th

AHSAA All-State Runners

Since 2012, we have had a total of twenty-six (26) All State Medalist with three (3) of those being State Champions.  We have had ten (10) All State Relay Medalist with two (2) of those being All State Relay Championship Team.  State Champions by event and year are listed below:

MEET HEAD COACH JOE SWAGART

Since the return of Indoor Track and Field, Coach Joe Swagart has been the head coach of seven teams, four years at Bayside Academy and three years at Cottage Hill Christian Academy, Coach Joe Swagart has helped hundreds of young people develop a passion of running while also developing them into responsible young adults.

In Coach Swagart’s first three seasons of Indoor Track and Field with Cottage Hill, his women’s and men’s best finishes were 10th and 11th respectively.  During those three years, he has had two athletes earn All-State Medalist honors three times: Caitlyn Dressler was 2nd in pole vault in 2014 and Lucas Bishop was State Champion in the 400m dash and 800m run in 2013. 

In Coach Swagart’s four seasons with Bayside Academy, his women’s and men’s best finish were 2nd and 4th respectively. During these four years, he has had nine athletes earn All-State Medalist honors fourteen times and six relays earn All-State Medalist honors.  Two of those individuals were State Champions three times (Amber Mason – 2018, long jump and shot put; Mary Catherine Branyon – 2016, 800m run) and one relay was State Champs (Young Men’s 4x800m relay in 2018 – Luke Dobbins, Robert Sullivan, Bradley Schmidt, Myles Cook).

Coach Swagart attended college at the University of South Alabama, earning a B.S. in Mathematics & Statistics in 2004 and M. Ed. in Secondary Education in 2018.  He has been married to Nancy Swagart for nine years.  He and his wife have a seven year old son, Owen a 2nd grader at Bayside Academy, and another son, Isaac, who is three.
