2019 AHSAA 4A Volleyball State Champions!

The Bayside Academy varsity volleyball team pulled off an unprecedented 18th-straight AHSAA State Championship on October 31 and now hold the national record for most consecutive state championships! In 2018, Bayside became the first school in AHSAA history to win titles in 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A. This marks 24 total state championships for Bayside under coach Ann Schilling and 27 total in program history. "What you guys accomplished is incredible," Schilling told her team after the win. "Some of you were not even born when the streak started. When I stop and think about the extreme pressure you have been playing under, it's just incredible. A true team effort, every single one of you was important to make this happen." Coach Schilling passed 1500 wins during the season with this team and has led the Bayside program to the state playoffs all 32 years of her coaching career. She was inducted into the AHSAA Sports Hall of Fame in March 2018.

As most everyone in the southeast knows, Bayside Academy has an outstanding volleyball program. What many of these same people may not know is that this award-winning program is unpretentiously led by the extraordinarily talented Coach Ann Schilling. Coach Schilling’s entire coaching career has been spent at Bayside Academy, where she was hired to teach PE, and coach basketball and volleyball, after graduating from Auburn University with a degree in physical education. At the time Schilling enrolled as a freshman, Auburn did not offer a volleyball program, but she walked on to the women’s basketball team and earned a scholarship as a sophomore. She played basketball for four years and then elected to stay on for a fifth year when Auburn reinstated its volleyball program. In nearly each of the 32 seasons that Coach Schilling has been coaching at Bayside, the Lady Admirals have been one of the top two teams in the state (23 state championships and 4 runner-up finishes since 1987). Under her leadership, Bayside currently holds the AHSAA all-time record of 17 consecutive state championships and is the first school in AHSAA history to win titles in 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A.

Obviously, Coach Schilling’s aptitude for coaching has played a large role in the tremendous success enjoyed for decades by the Lady Admirals. As she says, “I have always tried to provide a positive environment for student-athletes to learn about volleyball and work together as a team. I want them to be accountable not only to themselves but to the team – something that is necessary for both personal and team growth. I also stress good sportsmanship at all times, regardless of the score. I want our players to be motivated daily to do all they can to make the team successful.”

Although Coach Schilling is extremely modest about her accomplishments, she is renowned for her coaching ability and has been recognized nationally for her talent and the legacy she has built at Bayside. She has been named Coach of the Year almost every year for the past twenty years: six times as the Alabama High School Volleyball All-Star Coach (1993, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2003, and 2008), four times as the Birmingham News State Coach of the Year (1992, 2000, 2007, and 2011), and four times as the Press Register Super 12 Coach of the Year (1998, 2000, 2002, and 2011). Her accolades are not confined to the State of Alabama, either. She was the 2009 Prep Volleyball Co-National Coach of the Year and the 2011 National Federation of High School’s National Coach of the Year.
