Chess Team Wins 4th Straight State Championship

For the fourth consecutive year, the Admirals captured the U1300 High School Team Championship in the annual State Scholastic Chess Championship Tournament!
Five of the Bayside players were in the High School U1300 Division, which was a small but challenging division with five opponents rated higher than any Bayside players. (For perspective, the average rating of the Bayside team was 851. The four top players in the division were rated over 1000, the highest being 1200.) The Bayside High School team was comprised of senior captain Evan Stafford, senior Colt Hancock, freshman Elias Blossom, sophomore Burke Ramagosa, and freshman Don Chen. The team score was the total of the four highest scorers’ results across five rounds of play.

The win of the day was notched by Evan Stafford in the first round as he defeated the #1 seeded player from Bob Jones High School, the 1200 rated individual. Elias Blossom took second place individually, leading the team and finishing with four wins to only one loss. The team finished with nine points, indicating how tough the opposition was, but no other team entered more than two players.

Bayside also entered two players, 7th grader Jeremy Ou and 8th grader Luke Freeman, in the Middle School U1100 division. There were 49 players in this division, and Jeremy finished with a winning record for the day, getting three wins to two losses.

It is exciting to note that Colt Hancock has been a part of all four of Bayside’s consecutive State Championships, a nice way to finish his senior year.

In three weeks, Coach Paul Nager and four players will travel to Chicago to participate in the High School Nationals Tournament.
