Bayside Students Shine at Youth Leg

Over the weekend, Bayside proudly sent 42 students to the Alabama Youth Legislature Conference in Montgomery, where they joined peers from across the state to debate legislation, argue constitutional cases, and participate in a hands-on civic leadership experience.
Once again, Bayside’s 9th-Grade Delegation earned top honors at the state level, with the school boasting the most Outstanding Delegates in the First-Year Chamber. Bennett Lieb, Elizabeth Handwerger, Elias Blossom, Colman Klecker, and Hayden Coumanis were each named Outstanding Delegates. Coumanis also received the conference’s highest distinction, being named Most Outstanding Delegate.

In legislative achievements, John Stephen Klimjack and Hayden Coumanis had their bills passed in chambers and signed into law by the Youth Governor. Sebastian Winstead served as Senate Sergeant-at-Arms and celebrated the passage of his bill in the Senate. Pedro Benassi Monegatto played a key leadership role as Assistant Floor Leader in the House.

Bayside students also demonstrated excellence in the judicial and executive branches. Mary Helen Williams and Arabella Rowland served as Supreme Court Justices, hearing cases and ruling on their constitutionality throughout the weekend. Austin Pete Williams and Anne Riley Williams were selected to serve in the Governor’s Cabinet, contributing to executive leadership efforts during the conference.

Zoë Langley documented the weekend’s events as a member of the Youth Legislature media team, capturing the energy and accomplishments of participants. Additionally, Cruz McMurry earned selection as an alternate to the prestigious Conference on National Affairs, a national leadership forum that brings together top student delegates from across the United States.

Bayside Academy’s strong showing at Youth Legislature reflects the school’s continued commitment to academic excellence, civic engagement, and leadership development. The students’ accomplishments highlight not only their dedication and preparation, but also the strength of Bayside’s Youth Legislature program.
