The Bayside Academy YDL tackle football program is for 5th and 6th graders. This program helps introduce students to the game of football.
About the Coach
Coach Phil Lazenby has been coaching football for over 40 years and took over the Bayside football program in 2007. He has coached in six State Championship games, was awarded the Alabama Sports Writers Coach of the Year in both 1999 and 2011, and received the Lefty Anderson Service through Coaching Award in 2016. He was inducted into the AHSAA’s Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2019. Coach Lazenby began his coaching career as an assistant at his alma mater, Jess Lanier High School, and later moved to assist the program at Mountain Brook High School for ten years. His first head coaching position was Guntersville High School, followed by a year at Southside High School, and four years leading the Benjamin Russell High School team. After retiring from the public school system in 2000, Coach Lazenby moved to UMS-Wright as an assistant from 2001–06 and helped the Bulldogs win state titles in 2001, 2002, and 2005. Coach Lazenby spent 21 years serving in the military as a reserve soldier before retiring as a first sergeant in the 167th Infantry. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history and psychology from Samford University where he was a four-year letterman in football and a master’s degree from the University of Montevallo.
