Bayside Chess Open Draws a Crowd

Of those, 13 participants were Bayside students who represented the school well.

 

In the Unrated section, Bayside 5th grader Ben Freeman finished in a three-way tie for first and took home the first place trophy on tiebreakers with a 4-1 record. Other Bayside students in that section were 5th grader Hart Wilson, 3rd grader Branch Thomas, and kindergartener Shep Thomas. Other participants hailed from Magnolia Springs, Christ the King, W.J. Carroll and Fairhope Middle School. 

 

The Open section was dominated mostly by local adults, but three Bayside students played and each scored two out of four possible points: senior Michael Klimjack, junior Jacob Stallworth, and 8th grader Huan Chen. Jeff Tobin of Pensacola won the section with a perfect 4-0 score and took home the $100 prize.

 

The hotly contested Scholastic Rated section drew 30 participants, nearly half of which came all the way from Crestview High School in Florida. A Crestview player took first with a perfect 5-0 score, and there was a four-way tie for second, including two Bayside players. Seventh grader Elias Blossom and sophomore Boyce Magli both finished with 4-1 records. Blossom took the first place trophy for those with a rating under 600, while Magli took third place overall on tiebreaks. Also playing in the section were 8th grader John Stephen Klimjack, 7th grader Don Chen, and sophomores Evan Stafford and Colt Hancock.
